The Radiological Control Division provides radiological expertise through field-deployed technical personnel. It maintains an accredited personnel monitoring service, an instrumentation and calibration facility, and expertise in radiological engineering and nuclear materials management.

The Radiological Control Division (RCD) is seeking a candidate to qualify as a qualified Radiological Control Technician (RCT) to help implement the BNL Radiological Control Program. The candidate will shadow fully qualified RCTs and will receive instruction and performance training from RCD professionals during the qualification process.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist Senior RCT's with performing routine radiological surveys for areas to assess radiological conditions.

  • Provide daily performance checks to ensure functionality and calibration requirements.

  • Assist Senior RCT's with field measurement and sampling, data, and reporting.

  • Support routine dosimetry distribution.

  • Receive comprehensive instruction and hands-on performance-based training from experienced RCD professionals.

  • Learn to implement BNL's Radiological Control Program in accordance with DOE regulations and site-specific procedures.

  • Participate in routine and non-routine radiological surveys, job coverage, and contamination control efforts.

  • Progress toward full qualification as a Radiological Control Technician.

RequiredKnowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:
    - a technical institute or Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL or.
    - a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 1-year relevant work experience or.
    - 2 years relevant work experience.

  • Relevant experience should include, implementing safety requirements in industrial, research, healthcare, manufacturing setting.

  • Be respirator qualified or capable of obtaining respirator qualifications.

  • Musthave working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree in technical field.

  • Experience and knowledge implementing radiological control safety requirements.

  • Progress towards qualification as an RCT as per ANSI/ANS-3.1," selection, qualification, and training of personnel for nuclear power plants" or DOE-STD-1128, Radiological Control Technician Training.

Environmental, Health, and Safety Requirements:

  • Standing, bending, and lifting, up to 30 lbs.

  • Ability to climb fixed and portable ladders and work at heights up to 20 feet.

  • Work outdoors/cold environments.

  • Work in warm environments.

  • Ability to wear proper PPE such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and hearing protection.

  • Domestic travel may be required on occasion for training purposes.

  • Use of a personal car may be required at certain times.

Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $50000 - $58000 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
