Lead Carpenter


Department of Administrative Services - Facilities


Hourly Pay: $43.11



Summary: Assist Carpenter Supervisor in assigning work and supporting the Carpentry Team's day-to-day operations. Perform Journeyman level work in rough and finish carpentry to maintain Milwaukee County Facilities. Must be able to work in all Milwaukee County facilities including secured detention/high-security facilities and work in areas with sensitive information and assets.



Job Responsibilities:



  • Lead Duties: Carpenter Lead works with the Carpenter supervisor to assign work to carpenters, locksmiths, and coordinate contractor staff. During the Carpenter Supervisor's absence, the Carpenter Lead is responsible for the oversight of the team's day-to-day operations. This responsibility does not extend to HR-related matters.
  • Rough and finish carpentry: Perform rough and finish carpentry tasks related to remodeling and new construction projects. Create & install signage as required. Furniture and cabinet making & repair. Cubicle assembly and modifications. Installation & repair of door hardware and locking devices.
  • Emergency/call-in response: Provide 24/7 emergency response on a rotating call-in-basis.
  • Carpenter Shop Duties: Maintain inventory of commonly used materials and equipment. Perform maintenance on shop equipment
  • Participate in Contracted Projects: Project Planning and Review: Attend operation/capital projects meetings. Offer recommendations regarding departmental assets. Support contracted T&M projects and/or staff as necessary.
  • Interdepartmental cooperation/coordination: Collaborate with other departments to support the overall needs of County facilities.
  • Blueprint Maintenance: Maintain changes on as-build prints and communicate changes to the Engineering Department.
  • Other Duties as Assigned: Perform supportive and generalized duties as assigned.



Minimum Qualifications:



  • Current residency in the State of Wisconsin required.
  • A valid State of Wisconsin Driver's License at time of hire and maintained throughout employment.
  • HS Diploma/GED
  • At least Five (5) year or more of work experience as a Journeyman Carpenter or Carpenter Supervisor.
  • Applicants must successfully undergo a criminal history background check to establish security clearance for Milwaukee County facilities and maintain this clearance throughout employment.



Knowledge, Skills, Abilities required:



  • Basic knowledge of all related computer and software applications, such as word processing and spreadsheets and Email, Work Order System.



License: MUST HAVE



  • State or Federal Carpenter Apprenticeship completion certificate



Equipment, tools, or materials used to perform the job:



  • Van or pick-up truck, Fork Truck, Shop, and hand tools of the Carpenter trade such as hammers, drills, saws, etc., Step and extension.



Personal Protective Equipment used:




  • Safety glasses, hard hat, gloves, proper footwear, hearing protection, respirator.

The non-competitive examination will consist of criteria deemed appropriate by the Director of Human Resources.
