The Medical Director of Orthopedic Trauma is a physician leader, jointly accountable to the YNHHS Service Line Vice President, the Greenwich Hospital Trauma Program Medical Director, Associate Director and Manager, the Office of the Chief Medical Officer, and the Chair of Orthopedics at Greenwich Hospital. This newly appointed individual works to advance the delivery of clinical care and operational performance of the Greenwich Hospital Trauma Service, focusing on Orthopedic Trauma. This physician will work in partnership with the Trauma Service dyad nursing partner, administrative leadership, and other key stakeholders.
The incumbent Medical Director will be accessible to the Trauma team staff during routine hours for escalation of issues, clinical or operational, as they rise. The incumbent Medical Director will provide oversight and feedback, and ensure loop closure, accountability for physician performance as it pertains to the care of patients with trauma and/or orthopedic trauma, including escalation of issues as needed, regardless of the physician's clinical discipline, employment, or other factors.
The incumbent Medical Director will also collaborate with the Trauma Program Performance Improvement team, Quality and Safety, Emergency Medicine, Patient Experience, Regulatory Affairs, Social Work, and any other work group as necessary. The Medical Director will serve as a partner in, and be accountable for, the implementation of process improvement, quality and safety, access, patient experience, or any other improvement project in the unit/area/program, including but not limited to the engagement, monitoring, and performance of the clinical teams providing care to patients with orthopedic trauma. The incumbent will play a key role in American College of Surgeons trauma certification maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Meet no less than weekly with local leadership dyad/triad/administrative partners to coordinate and execute operational plans.
  • 2. Perform Trauma case reviews monthly and assist with loop closure to the Trauma team.
  • 3. Responsible for monitoring the performance, behavior, and oversight of physicians (primary team and consulting services) providing care to patients with orthopedic trauma, and responding to issues that arise, including escalating issues to Quality & Safety leadership, the Chief of Service, or Office of the Chief Medical Officer, when indicated.
  • 4. Responsible for operational metrics as designated by Greenwich Hospital leadership, including the drafting and execution of an annual plan in coordination with Service Line Leadership, Chief Medical Officer, Chief Clinical Officer, or other YNHHS leadership.
    • 4.1 Examples: LOS, patient experience, appointment availability, room utilization, etc). These plans and performance metrics will be reviewed annually by the service line leader and clinical chief.
  • 5. Represent Orthopedics on weekly multidisciplinary Trauma team meetings, including active participation and leading efforts assigned by the committee.
  • 6. Actively participate, collaborate, and engage in efforts to maintain American College of Surgeons Trauma Center accreditation.
  • 7. Participate in strategic planning as a subject matter expert.
  • 8. Serve as a collaborator and resource to Trauma Navigators and Manager when necessary.
  • 9. Provide ongoing education for the Surgery Physician Assistant group at GH.
  • 10. Collaborate with the Trauma Program team to assist in educating RNs, APPs, MDs and EMS providers with Trauma specific education.
  • 11. Additional Responsibilities:
    • 11.1 When not accessible for 5 or more consecutive working days, such as PTO/vacation, the incumbent medical director will designate a specific individual(s) to provide continuity in the duties outlined here.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

MD degree, full residency training and Board certification in internal/family medicine and Orthopedics mandatory.

EXPERIENCE

At least 1 year of experience providing clinical care at Greenwich Hospital or other similar medical center.

LICENSURE

Board eligible or certified in Orthopedics. Must have attending medical staff privileges at Greenwich Hospital, hold a valid Connecticut medical license, Connecticut Controlled Substance Registration and Federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Certification.
