Across our organization, we're building a workplace where collaboration is essential, diverse voices are heard, and inclusion is the key to our success. Intro to Position

This editor is a member of the NPR Newsroom's overnight team and reports to the Newshub Supervising Overnight Editor. The editor is responsible for editing news stories with NPR reporters for the UpFirst Podcast and Morning Edition Broadcast. The editor will also work with the Supervising Overnight Editor and help decide what stories to cover on our digital platforms overnight. They will commission, edit and sometimes write stories. They will regularly collaborate with various newsgathering teams and look for ways to spark signature NPR journalism from across our network. The overnight editor will also substitute for the Supervising Overnight Editor as needed.

The role requires impeccable news judgment. It requires someone who can multitask effortlessly, and nurture and grow writers.

The editor will have to be able to act in the moment -- starting a live blog when news warrants, positioning/priming reporters for assigned stories -- all the while keeping an eye on Chartbeat, Twitter, SnapMaps, Dataminr, Reddit, Crowdtangle, your own RSS feed and/or other signals to ensure we are staying competitive, and covering the right stories in the right way.

A big part of the role is editorial ingenuity: to find angles (and sources) to tell the stories that can be constructed at those hours - all the while keeping in mind our North Star of reaching diverse audiences.

A third critical component of this role is how we present the stories we create on our homepage and social platforms. The editor for this role thinks holistically about content creation and curation. If you can think in multimedia ways, with an eye (and ear) for social-native storytelling, and if your sound editorial decisions are informed by data and analytics, then you're someone we want.

This is a full-time position beginning as early as December of 2025. The work hours will be Monday through Friday, 12am-8am ET.

This is a union-represented role covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement withSAG-AFTRA; this role will require that the successful candidate enter into an employment agreement with NPR prior to their first day in the role.
