Job Description Summary: |
The Saw Lab at the George Washington University is looking for a lab technician who will participate in molecular biological and bioinformatic work to characterize microbial diversity, ecology, and evolution in extreme habitats. The lab technician will assist with microbiological and molecular biological lab experiments, general lab maintenance and administrative tasks, data generation and analysis, and work on independent research projects under the direction of the PI. The lab technician may also participate in fieldwork to collect samples from various locations.
Duties:
- Wet lab: DNA and RNA extraction, quantification, PCR, making of buffers and media for microbiological growth experiments, cataloging samples from fieldwork.
- Computational: use high-performance computational (HPC) clusters to analyze biological sequence data. Interpret and analyze results produced by various bioinformatic tools.
- Lab maintenance: organize labs, keep accurate inventory of chemicals and supplies, inform the PI if reordering of supplies is needed, ensure laboratory compliance for lab safety.
- Perform other duties as needed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
- Conference travel: travel to conferences if needed to give oral or poster presentations.

Minimum Qualifications: |
Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/
GED plus 1.5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. |

Preferred Qualifications: |
- BS or BA in Biology or related field is preferred.
- Experience with molecular biology techniques, including DNA/RNA extractions, PCR, and qPCR, is a plus but not required.
- Experience with microbiological techniques, such as aseptic techniques, media preparations, cultivation, and transformation of bacteria, is desired.
- Experience and familiarity with bioinformatic tools are a plus.
