Systems Administrator Apprentice

Position Summary:

The key areas of focus for the Systems Administrator Apprentice include Technology, Process Improvement, Leadership, and Presentation skills. The Apprentice will assist the V.P. of Enterprise IT Solutions with daily lab tasks, mentor interns, and be part of a team to help improve current lab policies and procedures. This Apprenticeship provides a learning environment rich with resources and experience.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:


  • From the technology side, LCE's Internship Program provides qualified applicants the potential to learn about the following technologies:

    • Cloud Private (VMWare, Nutanix, etc.) and Public (AWS, Azure, etc.)
    • Operating Systems (Red Hat Linux, Windows Server 2003/2008/2012)
    • Database Technologies (MSSQL, MySQL, Postgres)
    • Web development/management (Internet Information Server, Apache, Tomcat)
    • Information Security (Industry Standards, DoD Standards, Security+)
    • Networking (Cisco, Endian)
    • Development (Bash scripting, JavaScript, PHP, HTML5, etc.)
    • Software Quality Assurance Testing (Regression, Performance, Smoke, Unit, etc.)


  • Additionally, the Apprentice will have the opportunity to work with a team on learning leadership and presentation skills as well as process improvement which include but are not limited to:

    • Report generation system
    • Training and education tracking system
    • Lab automation
    • Equipment inventory
    • System integration and standardization
    • Monitoring and alerting




Required Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • Must be enrolled in a STEM degree program in a SC educational institution.



Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in the following:

    • Private and Public Cloud (VMWare, Nutanix, AWS, etc.)
    • Operating Systems (Linux, Windows Server 2003/2008)
    • Database Technologies (MSSQL 2008, MySQL)
    • Web development/management (Internet Information Server, Apache, Tomcat)
    • Information Security (Industry Standards, DoD Standards, Security+)
    • Networking (Cisco, Endian)
    • Development (Bash scripting, JavaScript, PHP, HTML5, etc.)
    • Software Quality Assurance Testing (Regression, Performance, Smoke, Unit, etc.)




Physical Demands and Expectations:

  • Regular physical activity to include walking, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, reaching, lifting (up to 30 pounds), and standing; occasional prolonged sitting
  • Ability to speak, read, hear and write, with or without assistance
  • Ability to use phone and computer systems, copier, fax and other office equipment
