GENERAL SUMMARY: The Laboratory Services Assistant Manager manages laboratory services resources and coordinates the activities of personnel engaged in performing phlebotomy and data control functions. Maintains quality control of processes and product inventory used in phlebotomy and data control. Promotes retention of staff through recognition and promotion of teamwork. Promotes and encourages professional development of laboratory staff. Assures optimal patient care standards through daily interaction and role modeling. Supports and facilitates a respectful and collaborative relationship between medical staff, hospital staff, and laboratory staff. PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values. 2. *Directs and advises departmental personnel in phlebotomy and data control procedures; facilitates the scheduling of phlebotomy and data control staff to ensure coverage for all required areas; supervises and evaluates the work of assigned phlebotomy and data control personnel. 3. *Performs phlebotomy and data control in conjunction with phlebotomy personnel; interacts with staff and sustains collaborative relationships with other departments. 4. *Assists the Laboratory Services Manager with the selection and hiring of qualified candidates for phlebotomy workgroups. 5. *Facilitates and provides on-the-job training pertaining to data control and phlebotomy activities for departmental new hires. 6. *Performs quarterly reporting of STAT, timed turn around times and QI monitors as assigned. 7. *Performs direct observations of staff engaged in phlebotomy; completes annual performance evaluations on time. 8. *Maintains documentation of initial and annual training of staff; ensures mandatory training is completed as scheduled. 9. *Participates in annual review of policy and procedures; enforces established performance standards and procedural protocols, ensuring proficiency and competency; implements, monitors and enforces safety policies and procedures. 10. *Routinely assists the Laboratory Services Manager in concurrent and retrospective resolution of patient, family, and/or physician concerns or complaints. 11. *Routinely assists the Laboratory Services Manager in completion and/or resolution of incidents and/or feedback B-Safe files. 12. *Timely, objectively, and constructively coaches staff as needed when practice and/or safety issues are observed or reported; documents as appropriate. 13. *Routinely assists Laboratory Services Manager in laboratory safety training of staff; assessing competency; and maintaining a safe work environment through safety rounds. 14. *Routinely assists Laboratory Services Manager in coaching and training staff as directed to achieve an excellent patient experience. 15. *Routinely assists the Laboratory Services Manager in training phlebotomy staff in infection control practices, assessing competency, and maintaining documentation. 16. *Works collaboratively with the Lab Services Manager to assure that meaningful leader/employee rounding is completed according to span of control expectations. 17. Practices personal and professional improvement through continuing education and development opportunities. 18. Advances work knowledge by participating in continuing education inservices, reading periodicals/literature and seeking ongoing development opportunities. 19. Coordinates staffing and performance of Health Fair collections as assigned. 20. Performs other related duties as assigned. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 1. Knowledge of clinical phlebotomy methods and procedures. 2. Knowledge of quality improvement tools and processes. 3. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions. 4. Ability to schedule, direct, counsel and evaluate employee work and performance. 5. Ability to problem-solve and make decisions in accordance with facility protocols and regulatory agency requirements. 6. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. 7. Ability to read, interpret and enforce departmental safety rules, equipment operating and maintenance requirements and policy and procedures. 8. Ability to provide on-the-job training in laboratory sample collection. 9. Ability to develop written policies and procedures, memoranda and performance evaluations with measurable behaviors. 10. Ability to balance and prioritize diverse management and clinical responsibilities. 11. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel, medical staff, volunteer and ancillary departments including diverse patient populations. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Associate's degree (AA) or two (2) years progress toward a Bachelor of Science degree in health care related field of study required; Bachelor of Science degree is preferred. Minimum two (2) years experience as a phlebotomist required. OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS: (PBT) Certification for Phlebotomy Technician by the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent certification preferred. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: (Physical Requirements are based on federal criteria and assigned by Human Resources upon review of the Principal Job Functions.) (DOT) - Characterized as light work requiring exertion up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to distinguish and discriminate between colors. |
