Department Summary

The Division of Research and Innovation at the University of North Texas supports the generation and dissemination of knowledge by assisting faculty and students in their research, scholarly work and creative activities. Our mission is to support, facilitate, and empower the growth of sustainable research at UNT. Position Overview

The Budget Officer position within the Division of Research Innovation will provide budget monitoring and oversight for multiple units within the research division, including: Toulouse Graduate School (TGS), Grants & Contracts Administration (GCA), Research Integrity & Compliance (RIC), Innovation & Commercialization (I&C), Research Development, and Student Research Development. This position will be responsible for day-to-day budget planning, reconciliation, forecasting, and reporting for these units. Position will report to the Sr Director, Division Budget and Operations.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with coursework in accounting, finance, business or related field and two years of progressively responsible financial administration or budget management experience or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Skill in collecting and analyzing data.
Knowledge of budgetary principles, practices and procedures.
Ability to prepare concise reports.
Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
Knowledge of electronic information systems and accounting systems.

Preferred Qualifications

Proficiency with Excel, PowerBi, ePar, ePro, Coupa, and Peoplesoft EIS software modules.
Work experience with budgeting and accounting in Higher Education, and knowledge of university fiscal processes and financial policies.

Job Duties



  • Manages budget funding for TGS, GCA, RIC, I&C, Research Development, and Student Research Development units to include reconciliation and monitoring of revenues, expenditures and balances. Provides estimates and forecasting for budget planning and expense tracking. Prepares budget reporting and data analysis.
  • Processes accounting transactions required to manage assigned units budgets, such as ABAs, IDTs, Journal Entries, and Cost Transfers. Also serves as first level approver for assigned units' financial transactions, such as procurement (Pcard, ePro) and travel (Coupa).
  • Serves as subject matter expert for assigned units by providing budgetary, procurement, payroll, and travel/employee reimbursement guidance for administrative support staff submitting those transactions to ensure fiscal compliance with allowability, UNT and UNT System processes, and budget/accounting best practices.
  • Attends all university and system offered trainings with regards to budget, procurement, HR, travel, payroll, time & labor, and other applicable administrative functions for continuing education to remain current on all UNT and UNT System processes and best practices.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned by supervisor.
