Job Title: Scientific Literature and Systems Specialist

Location: Richmond, VA
Key Responsibilities:


  • Article Acquisition: Contractor will obtain copyright-compliant, electronic scientific articles through designated Client resources. Contractor will manage and track the status of articles ordered and received. Contractor will provide Client periodic status updates on article ordering and fulfillment.
  • Article Management: Contractor will upload electronic copies of copyright-compliant articles into Client's literature management system. Contractor also will add meta-data for each article such as bibliographic details. Generally, meta-data is governed by templates.
  • Conduct Literature Review Activities: Contractor will conduct tasks related to screening and review of scientific literature including reviewing scientific articles against Client inclusion/exclusion criteria, extracting responsive data from articles, and documenting results in the Client database. These activities are conducted electronically in the literature management system.
  • QC Third-Party Deliverables: Client also engages third parties to conduct tasks related to the screening and review of scientific literature. Contractor will conduct scientific (QC) review of the resulting third-party work products for consistency with established Client criteria. As needed, Contractor will integrate QC and other Client feedback into third-party work products.
  • Leverage Systems to Build Bibliographies: In addition to a Literature Management System, Client maintains a citation management database (EndNote). Contractor will use articles or article meta-data in the Client databases to build MS Word-based bibliographies for designated topic areas and projects that conform with Client style and other requirements. This may include creating citation groups within the EndNote database, generating reports from the literature management system, or producing files with information derived from both systems.
  • Other Literature Support as Needed: May include researching missing abstracts, confirming article copyright permissions, or activities to clean-up historical meta-data in either of the Client databases. Contractor will participate in teleconferences or other meetings with Client personnel to discuss the planning for or status of Contractor services and deliverables.


Required Qualification:


  • A Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline is required, preferably in the life sciences (e.g., Chemistry, Biology, Toxicology, Behavioral Science, or related fields).
  • Demonstrated proficiency synthesizing scientific literature.
  • Demonstrated proficiency managing collections of scientific articles for self or others using structured systems, databases, or tools.
  • Strong demonstrated attention to detail. Ability to manage and execute effectively within multiple projects and changing timelines. Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written. Able to grasp new concepts easily.
  • Skilled with MS Excel and MS Word, and citation management tools (EndNote preferred).
