Job Summary

To provide independent advanced level nurse practitioner clinical expertise to patients and their families on an on-going basis and oversee advanced practice team. This includes managing scheduling, time off requests and organizational oversight of the work unit to ensure the competence and qualications of direct reports. Management of the APP team will be a collaborative effort with the APP manager with contribution and recommendations for hiring, on-boarding and counseling. APPs are expected to act as an expert resource person for health care providers including nurses, residents and other ancillary staff.

Acts as an expert resource person for health care providers, orients/precepts new advanced practice team members to role responsibilities of the service, establishes standardized procedures and protocols for APP practice, conducts research and teaching programs. Assists in establishing educational opportunities for nurse practitioners. Acts as a liaison for APP supported services and ED Executive Director and Nurse Managers.

Provides practice supervision for all APP FTE assigned. Acts in the absence of the program manager. Provides support for the APP direct reports. Provides direct patient care to a diversied patient population. Applies knowledge, experience and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, set priorities, and use abstract thought to evaluate clinical situations. Participates in patient and staff education. Demonstrates leadership skills.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Current California license in one of the following specialties: RN/NP, RN/CRNA, RN/CNM, RN/CNS, or Physician Assistant
  • Possession of valid CA RN and Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner license or Physician Assistant
  • Possession of a valid CA NP furnishing license if NP candidate
  • Possession of a valid DEA number
  • National board certication in an aligned specialty (e.g., if mental health, must have Psychiatric specialty national board certication)
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS CPR, ACLS and PALS and all certications required for area of work
  • ATLS certification within 1 year of hire
  • American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR.
  • Graduation with a Master's degree, DNP or PhD in a related healthcare eld from an accredited School of Nursing or PA school.
  • At least 2 years of APP leadership experience
  • At least six months of experience with precepting, orienting and APP education.
  • Ability to cope with personal stress experienced by team members, other professionals, and caretake Excellent verbal and written communication skills Judgement skills to effectively meet the needs of patients Self-direction and organizational skills to function in an independent role Ability to meet minimum standards for hospital credentialing and billing standards as a billable provider

Preferred Qualifications

  • California Children's Services (CCS) Paneling
  • One year or greater experience as a leader with direct reports preferred
  • One year or greater recent clinical experience in specialty care of the hiring department highly desirable
  • One year experience with precepting, orienting and APP education

Department Overview

Emergency Medicine provide Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma care for more than 33 of California's 58 counties. UC Davis Health System is home to state-of-the-art emergency care for children. Our Pediatric Emergency Department features the only Level 1 pediatric trauma center in inland Northern California (verified by the American College of Surgeons). From Portland to Fresno, from outside the Bay Area to Reno, no other hospital in inland Northern California has a Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma center servicing approximately 70,000 patients each year.

The Department of Emergency Medicine at UC Davis provides a dedicated team of physicians, nurses, 42 residents, and a total of 26 specialists of every medical and surgical specialty to treat critically ill and injured adults and children. Our team provides an extraordinary level of knowledge, skill and compassion to every patient we serve at our Level 1 Surgery and Emergency Services Pavilion. The Emergency Department is prepared and equipped to provide comprehensive and efficient emergency care to patients in need of medical and surgical specialty physicians to treat critical and acute illnesses and injuries 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Acts as a liaison for APP supported services and ED Executive Director of Emergency Department. Provides advanced practice for all NP II/PA FTE assigned. Provides support for the NP/PA direct reports, receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and processes by which to attain them.
