Responsible for secretarial and clerical duties as well as obtaining and processing specimens for laboratory testing and screening.

  • Responsible for answering phone professionally, receiving and relaying messages, and answering general questions.
  • Responsible for scanning and documenting of clinical laboratory reports on all patients.
  • Retrieves information as requested.
  • Verifies the accuracy of all invoice from outside reference laboratories.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care error.
  • Responsible for giving appropriate instructions to clinic and outpatients having testing done according to policy and procedures for clinical laboratory test and preparation requirements.
  • Duplicates material using photo copy machine and/faxes when needed.
  • Shared responsibility to check-in hospital outpatients.
  • Shared responsibility for obtaining blood specimens by performing venipuncture and finger sticks.
  • Maintains good working relationship within the departments, with other departments, and with physicians on both clinic and hospital.
  • Works with lab manager to improve processes within the laboratory.
  • Maintains supplies including requisitions, reference lab supplies, and orders as necessary.
  • Checks for outdated inventory and disposes of properly.
  • Sends laboratory request to appropriate facilities/departments.
  • Assist doctors/nursing with special laboratory testing request.
  • Assist with processing in house and send out specimens for testing.
  • Places order in the EMR system accurately.
  • Obtain new employee/random urine drug screens per policy.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of correct anticoagulant to use for patient specimen collection.
  • Notifies patient care units/PVMG nursing and lab if unable to obtain specimen in timely manner.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of new testing methods, products, instrument requirements; remains informed on all current technologies.
  • Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and functional under stressful situations.
  • Demonstrates the value of team concept on a consistent basis.
  • Maintains current knowledge of hospital policy, HFAP, state and other regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in training of new employees, using standardized orientation materials.
  • Completes Correction verification/Insurance verification forms in a timely manner.
  • Reviews reference pending log.


Regulatory Requirements:



  • BLS required within 6 months of hire.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Prior Phlebotomy or medical experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology.
