The American Hospital Association (AHA) is a national organization that represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks, and their patients and communities. The AHA has two main offices, located in Washington, D.C. and Chicago. We are currently seeking an Executive Director, AONL Foundation. This position is a 100% outbased..

Starting base salary = $151,000- $189,000- $227,000 (commensurate with related experience). The AHA is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. A candidate's salary is determined by various factors including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications, and location.

The Executive Director, AONL Foundation is responsible for setting strategic direction, overseeing operations and programs, and driving fundraising initiatives for the Foundation-a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit supporting organization of the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL) focused on supporting nursing leadership research and education. Serve as the primary spokesperson and ambassador, and represent the Foundation within the nursing leadership, health care, and philanthropic communities through events, publications, and strategic partnerships. In close collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders-including the AONL Foundation Board, AONL and AHA leadership and staff, volunteers, external partners, and donors, lead a small team to advance the Foundation's mission and build on the Foundation's past fundraising and programmatic successes.

Essential Functions include, but are not limited to the following:



  • Provide overall strategic direction and day-to-day operational oversight of the Foundation to advance its mission and impact. Lead execution of near-term priorities including refining the Foundation's messaging, strengthening internal operations, and enhancing governance practices.
  • Optimize board and committee structures, clarify roles and responsibilities, and implement practices that increase engagement, accountability, and alignment with strategic goals. Serve as the lead liaison to the Foundation Board and ensure effective governance and decision-making.
  • Design and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy focused on long-term financial sustainability. Lead efforts to diversify revenue by expanding partnerships with corporations, individual donors, and philanthropic institutions.
  • Build and manage relationships with major donors, high-net-worth individuals, industry partners, and foundations through personalized cultivation strategies, donor communications, and stewardship programming that deepens engagement and drives giving.
  • Ensure responsible financial management through clear tracking systems, transparent reporting, and performance indicators that measure program effectiveness, fundraising outcomes, and donor engagement.
  • Develop and execute a robust, year-round communications strategy that incorporates storytelling, donor recognition, impact reporting, and multi-channel outreach to raise visibility and demonstrate value to supporters and stakeholders.
  • Manage all aspects of board operations, including meeting planning, agenda setting, materials development, and follow-up on action items. Partner with AONL and AHA leadership as needed to align Foundation activities with the broader organizational structure and expectations.
  • Translate the Foundation's strategic roadmap into clear, actionable initiatives, establishing milestones and regular performance check-ins to track progress and ensure alignment with long-term goals.

Education
Bachelor's Degree in related field of PUBLIC HEALTH-HEALTH ADMINISTRATION (required)
Experience
10 years: *Leadership experience in nonprofit or foundation management, with strong background in fundraising, donor engagement and strategic planning.
