The Plant Operator/Back-up Driver is responsible for filling industrial, medical and specialty gas products into liquid gas cylinders in compliance with federal, state, local regulations, and meeting the standard operating procedures of Airgas. Responsible for meeting all safety standards in the loading and unloading of cylinder gases per Airgas procedures. Responsible for performing backup duties as a Driver and Administrative when necessary.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Operates safely maintain equipment for pumping or repackaging gases into cylinders.

  • Performs minor maintenance of equipment and inspection of cylinders prior to filling.

  • Use standard pre-fill and post-fill inspections, tests, and operating procedures before cylinders are released.

  • Regularly inspect and maintain pumping apparatus and associated pressure gauges and monitoring devices used in daily activities.

  • Fill cylinders or containers to proper capacity and accurately maintain cylinder filling records and ensure that all required procedures are followed in order to comply with local, state and federal regulations.

  • Complete daily fill sheets and cylinder filling records accurately and timely.

  • Complete and attach warning and other identification tags, labels and decals to cylinders.

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Drives up to a 20-ton truck loaded with compressed gas cylinders, liquid cylinders and hard-goods to deliver to customers on a scheduled route.

  • Maintains load manifests and all other vehicle documents, ensuring they are properly completed and balanced with truck counts and shipping documents before and after deliveries.

  • Loads/unloads truck and sets up cylinders for customer use.

  • Picks up empty cylinders from customer sites and returns empty cylinders to the plant for refilling.

  • Unloads empty cylinders at the branch/plant and stages in the appropriate area for refilling.

  • Records deliveries and pick-ups on a load manifest and obtains signatures from customers for receipt purposes.

  • Must be at least 21 years of age

  • Class A CDL

  • Must have 12 months' experience with Straight Truck or Bulk Straight Truck, or Driving School Certificate.

  • Must have HAZMAT endorsement or be able to obtain the endorsement within 60 days of being hired.

  • Successful completion of Airgas Background and Motor Vehicle Check.

  • DOT Clearinghouse verification from previous employers is required.

  • Ability to routinely lift 25 - 75 lbs., and occasionally lift 76 to greater than 100 lbs.

  • Willingness to work outdoors in changing temperatures.

  • Ability to maintain a drug-free workplace.

  • Adherence to safety regulations and policies.

Preferred

  • Industry and related product knowledge, as well as experience with properly handling compressed gases, preferred.

  • Customer service or sales experience, preferred
