What to Expect
The Yard Hostler is responsible for safely moving and positioning trailers and containers within the yard to ensure efficient loading and unloading operations. This role requires strong communication skills to coordinate with dock personnel and drivers, as well as adherence to safety protocols. Candidates should have experience in logistics or yard operations, a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) is required, and must be able to operate yard trucks safely. Attention to detail and strong organizational skills are essential for maintaining yard efficiency.
What You'll Do
- Operate tractor to move and position trailers
- Hook and unhook trailers and secure outbound trailer doors
- Spot trailers at dock spaces for loading andunloading
- Document moves using yard and trailer management system
- Assist drivers with inquiries and issues
- Inspect trucks and trailers daily; report maintenance and safety issues
- Complete and submit daily yard check documentation
What You'll Bring
- 1+ years of experience with 3-axle tractor and 53' traileror equivalent experience
- Ability to read up close and at arm's length, with or without correction
- Excellent distance vision and constant alertness
- Class A drivers license preferred
Essential Physical Demands
- Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods of time, up to 12 hours a day
- Ability to stand and walk for up to 12 hours a day, including over varied and uneven terrain
- Frequently and repetitively, lift, push and carry up to 35 lbs., including the ability to carry 20 lbs. up and down stairs
- Frequently and repetitively, bend, lift and reach to install parts
- Stoop, lay, bend, reach, squat, kneel, crouch, twist and crawl for extended periods of time, including up to 12 hours a day
- Climb and maintain balance on ladders, scaffolding or other high structures
- Ability to find issues in a work process and receive safety signals using sight, touch, and hearing
- Wearing Personal Protective Equipment, including but not limited to: hard hat, safety glasses, safety shoes, reflective vest, and adhering to prescribed safety rules and guidelines
