About the Caltech Facilities Planning, Design & Construction Department
The Planning, Design and Construction team takes great pride in serving Caltech by delivering the built environment required to support the needs of the institute. Our team of seasoned industry professionals sincerely values working closely with the campus to define project requirements and design and deliver successful projects. Our roles cover the project life cycle, ranging from in-house planning and design, space management, project and construction management, construction inspection to specialized procurement expertise. Job Duties
This position reports to the Senior Mechanical Engineer at the Planning, Design and Construction department. The responsibilities of this position include:
- Assisting in the design of mechanical systems from conception through construction for small and large buildings projects including preparation of calculations, reports, and specifications
- With guidance from senior team members, perform fire suppression system selection and prepare designs involving the design of mechanical HVAC systems
- Coordinate work with other disciplines and team members
- Conduct design documents reviews of work prepared by consultants
- Ensure planning design and construction meet project requirements and conform with all applicable codes and Caltech Design Guidelines
- Contribute to the continual improvement of the Caltech Design Guidelines
- Conduct field surveys to evaluate existing building conditions
- Work within a project team environment, interface and communicate with other design team members
- Perform building heating and cooling load calculations.
- Analyze and select building HVAC and plumbing equipment
- Support projects during construction including shop drawing review, request for information responses, and punch list generation.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- Minimum 5 years of relevant engineering experience in mechanical HVAC and plumbing design for new, existing, and renovation building design
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Proficiency in AutoCAD & Bluebeam
- Familiarity with chilled and heating hot water distribution, calculations and equipment selection
- Familiarity with laboratories, server rooms, clean rooms and other specialized types of spaces
- Ability to perform manual heat load calculations
- Basic understanding of pumps, Exhaust fans, air handlers, fan coils & air distribution systems.
- Ability to interact with contractors to respond to Value Engineering issues and RFIs
- Ability to effectively communicate with HVAC, Controls and Plumbing shop personnel and suggest appropriate solutions as needed
- Ability to communicate with the project managers, understand their needs and present cost effective & practical solutions
- Proficiency with DDC controls, sequences of operation and control diagrams
- Familiarity with the commissioning process
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE), or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) close to attaining PE.
- Experience in Construction Administration phases.
- Demonstrated experience in mechanical and plumbing engineering design specifically for labs or other high-accuracy high-complexity environments.
- Familiarity with HVAC specific software such as Energy Pro, Trane Trace or Carrier HAP heating/cooling load calculation tools.
- Knowledge of and/or experience with high-performance and sustainable building practices.
- Proficiency in Revit.

Hiring Range
$111,400 - $121,700 Per Year
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
