Position Summary:
The Office of Institutional Effectiveness (OIE) is seeking a highly capable Data Science & Survey Analytics Specialist to support the university's institutional research, survey analytics, and data science initiatives. This hourly role works under the direction of the Associate Director for Survey Research and Information and contributes to a broad portfolio of projects spanning quantitative analysis, machine learning, NLP, and automated data workflow development.

The Specialist will support survey design and evaluation processes, build reproducible data pipelines, analyze large-scale datasets, and generate dashboards and analytical deliverables used by campus leadership. This position offers strong professional development opportunities for an early-career data professional looking to advance skills in data science, AI-driven analytics, and applied institutional research.

Essential Functions:
-Contribute to the design, piloting, and documentation of institutional survey instruments.
-Build and maintain automated ETL pipelines for survey data ingestion, cleaning, transformation, and integration.
-Conduct quantitative and qualitative analytics, including:
-Statistical analysis of student and faculty survey datasets
-NLP workflows such as topic modeling, sentiment analysis, and text classification
-Machine learning and predictive modeling using structured and unstructured data
-Utilize modern NLP and ML libraries, such as:
-sentence-transformers.
-transformers (HuggingFace)
-spaCy
-scikit-learn
-BERTopic, UMAP-learn, HDBSCAN
-Develop dashboards and visualizations in Power BI and other analytical tools.
-Produce research briefs, analytical summaries, and data visual stories for institutional stakeholders.
-Support preparation of materials for grants, conference presentations, and academic publications.
-Maintain documentation, code repositories, and workflow logs that support reproducible research.
-Assist with digital content management and updates on Drupal-based platforms.

Prerequisite Qualifications:
-Strong written and verbal communication skills.
-Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Power BI.
-Ability to manage confidential and sensitive data responsibly.
-Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple concurrent projects.
-Competence in working independently and collaboratively in a professional environment.
-Familiarity with Drupal or comparable content management systems.
-At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

Preferred Qualifications:
-Experience with Python, SQL, SPSS (syntax), or STATA (syntax).
-Experience with NLP/ML libraries such as sentence-transformers, transformers, spaCy, scikit-learn, BERTopic, UMAP-learn, HDBSCAN.
-Experience developing ETL workflows or analytics pipelines.
-Familiarity with design or visualization tools such as Canva.
-Graduate-level coursework in data science, statistics, education, public policy, or related fields.
-Interest in data-informed decision-making and higher-education analytics.

Salary Information:
In compliance with the NJ Pay Transparency Law, the hourly rate for this position is $35.00 (USD). NJIT considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses or other items.
