The Position

2026 Summer Intern - Human Factors Engineering

Department Summary

We are a team of scientists and engineers that develop medical devices and combination products to support the Genentech/Roche Pharma Portfolio. As a part of Device and Packaging Development, the human factors engineering team supports projects at all stages of development, from before the first human clinical trial of a product through improvements after launch. The team supports human factors engineering needs throughout the project lifecycle, including:

  • Advocating for the user in the development process

  • Providing input on user and design requirements to develop product user interfaces

  • Developing instructions for use and training

  • Conducting human factors studies to gather early-stage data and assess/optimize product usability

  • Identifying and mitigating use-related risks

  • Conducting user studies

  • Providing input to the clinical team and launching device training

  • Authoring human factors reports and content for health authority submissions

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity

The human factors intern will provide support for ongoing activities related to our devices under development. Example devices include prefilled syringes, autoinjectors, digital health technology, ocular tools and devices, and on-body injectors. The intern will work with human factors engineers on any of the following activities:

  • Planning usability studies and collecting/analyzing data

  • Providing input and recommendations for device design

  • Contributing to human factors reports and documents (e.g., risk analyses)

  • Participating in human factors team continuous improvement activities (e.g., development of internal tools and templates)

  • Attending human factors team and individual device team meetings

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June (Summer).

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.

Who You Are (Required)

Required Education: You meet one of the following criteria:

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (enrolled student).

  • Must have attained a Bachelor's Degree (not currently enrolled in a graduate program).

  • Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student).

  • Must have attained a Master's Degree.

Required majors: Human Factors Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Psychology, or a closely related field.

Required Skills:

  • Understanding of human factors principles and user-centered design.

  • Knowledge and experience with general human factors methods, which may include user testing, heuristic evaluation, use-related risk analysis.

  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative research.

  • Experience and/or interest in applying human factors to the healthcare or medical device industries.

  • Strong technical writing skills.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

  • Knowledge of medical device and combination product regulations is helpful, but not required.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $26.00-$40.00 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
