The Lead, Data Quality & Modeling is a hybrid role and is responsible for identifying and resolving issues in data accuracy, reliability, and consistency as well as supporting design of data models for both the Cloud Analytics Platform and GATX Custom Applications. They will ensure that data sources and designs meet business requirements and are compliant with vision, standards, and guidelines set forth by Data Governance and the overall IT organization. The incumbent is instrumental in ensuring continued improvement in the reliability and quality of GATX's data resources in support of the operational, analytic and information needs of the business.

The incumbent is also responsible for performing business and data analysis (BA/DA) activities related to the management of information resources required to support the business objectives of the organization. These activities include ensuring standardized data names and definitions, maintaining models in a repository, and determining data sources. They will be a key player in the development of databases and other data structures to minimize redundancy and maximize the compatibility of data among data stores. This includes playing the lead role in data modeling, data design, and developing requirements and design specifications for new and existing operational, data warehousing and analytic solutions. This role will support and influence the Data Governance program and practices through their IT and business.



Responsibilities

Data Quality

    Support Data Owners through data quality rule establishment and management.
  • Promote compliance with data administration standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Promote and develop data sharing strategies.
  • Perform repository management.
  • Establish and ensure compliance with data naming standards.
  • Perform data quality reviews and recommend and institute improvements.
  • Understand and execute technical knowledge of data administration, data quality, and metadata practices.
  • Support the usage, activities, and quality of the platform, and its metadata via meetings and daily work to improve data governance metrics.
  • Perform data quality (DQ) checks for production Data Assets to ensure accuracy, completeness, consistency, and timeliness.
  • Support adherence to "QA" (quality assurance) processes ensuring they are applied to all DARI Data Assets, reports, and dashboards.
  • Work closely with developers to ensure performance to DQ metrics, and accuracy and completeness of technical metadata and lineage.
  • Implement DQ monitoring processes to identify and address data inconsistencies, duplicates and inaccuracies.
  • Perform data cleansing and remediation activities, in accordance with GATX strategy, to improve data quality across systems.
  • Serve as liaison between Data Owners and Data Engineers to effectively implement data quality rules and standards
  • Create and perform training on various Data Quality elements as necessary.
  • Create standard documentation to ensure best practices are followed and maintain efficiency, as needed.

Data Analysis

  • Work with business representatives to understand the current and desired business processes at GATX.
  • Understand business processes and how underlying applications/data can support and enable related processes.
  • Assess, analyze, and refine requirements as part of defined projects and initiatives.
  • Focus should be on both long-term initiatives and rapid, simple changes where business value can be achieved
  • Assist in post-implementation continuous improvement efforts and production support.
  • Provide technical knowledge and solutions for current ETL and Reporting tools.
  • Provide data analysis and problem resolution for production data warehousing / data mart issues, including the most complex technical problems.
  • Maintain close communication with business counterparts and IT staff involved in the resolution of challenging data problems.

Data Modeling

  • Work with IT and business counterparts in the development and maintenance of data and analytic solutions for the enterprise.
  • Consolidate/transcribe multiple logical application and ERP data models into an enterprise-wide data model and analytic model.
  • Enhance and maintain the technical metadata repository.
  • Work closely with Business Application Development teams and Data Warehousing teams in the performance of project-specific data tasks pertaining to the enterprise-wide data model.
  • Work with Architects and Business Analysts to generate data models and implement data modeling concepts to satisfy business requirements
  • Coordinate new data development to ensure that it is consistent and well-integrated with existing data structures.
  • Coordinate enhancements and maintenance of data changes.
  • Perform data analysis and design and create business object and logical data models working with other IT and Data, Analytics, Reporting and Integration (DARI) team members.
  • Ensure continued improvement in the reliability and quality of GATX's information architecture in support of the operational, informational and analytic needs of the business.
  • Maintain a strong technical knowledge of data administration, data quality, and metadata practices in accordance with IT and DARI Data Governance policies.
  • Timing in this activity is expected to be split evenly between Cloud Analytics Platform and GATX Custom Applications, however, shifts due to projects can be expected.
  • Support the creation and tuning of SQL queries and database objects (views) in support of both application development and analytic efforts.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or other relevant technical discipline required; concentrations in Data Management, Reporting/Analytics and Data Warehousing preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years of related experience in a corporation of comparable size and complexity to GATX.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience working with advanced SQL including the ability to write advanced queries, views, and performance tuning of queries.
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience working with Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) and Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) database design patterns.
  • Experience writing Oracle PL/SQL is optional but strongly desired.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint (Teams and SharePoint a plus).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate at all levels of the organization.
  • Knowledge and experience in applying structured problem-solving practices; formal training relevant certification is desirable.
  • Must be able to understand and translate application and business requirements into logical data models and apply appropriate normalization techniques.
  • Must possess an in-depth knowledge of systems development life cycle, entity relationship diagrams and other logical data modeling techniques, as well as technical data management concepts, tools, and techniques.
  • Must possess an in-depth knowledge of enterprise data modeling techniques including dimensional and third normal form modeling.
  • Demonstrated experience building and tuning data models for both transactional applications and analytic / business intelligence systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in data resource function related tools (ETL, Erwin, Hackolade, Toad, Reporting/Query) required.
  • Solid working knowledge of relational databases, specifically Oracle. Experience in Postgres is a desirable.
  • Experience in Business Intelligence tools such as Power BI.
  • Understanding of custom built as well as COTS (Commercial, off-the-shelf) systems and technology.
  • Project management skills. Understanding and application of project management, estimating, forecasting, planning, scheduling and risk management concepts and techniques.

Other:

  • Occasional travel is expected
  • Occasional work on nights and weekends to support production environment and meet project demands and deadlines

USD $109,900.00/Yr.


Max

USD $157,000.00/Yr.
This role may be eligible to participate in the Company's short-term incentive plan, the details of which will be provided to the applicant upon hire.
This range is a reasonable estimate and takes into account several factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including, but not limited to, geographic location, skill set, experience, education, training, internal equity, and other business needs.
