Overview

The Senior Engineer under general guidance directs or performs specific engineering assignments of major size or complexity and makes independent decisions on engineering problems and methods. The Senior Engineer establishes specifications for contracts, review bids and may make or approve field design changes. On station assignments, the Senior Engineer may represent Central Engineering in the resolution of engineering problems and in coordinating work to be done.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Develops, plans, and designs new and refurbishment projects, including evaluating technical alternatives, performing economic analyses, preparing specifications, conducting feasibility studies, and supporting long-term planning.
  • Performs engineering work at the request and under the direction of other engineering organizations.
  • Serves as sponsor engineer, collaborating with internal departments on the design, estimating, installation, testing, maintenance, and commissioning of mechanical, control, and instrumentation equipment.
  • Prepares capital appropriations for sponsored projects.
  • Prepares, or directs the preparation of, technical specifications and system designs for the installation and repair of mechanical, computer, control, and instrumentation equipment.
  • Develops engineering sketches to support system modifications and monitors implementation by company forces.
  • Initiates funding requests for small-scale projects.
  • Recommends design improvements related to generating plant systems.
  • Reviews preliminary engineering drawings and specifications with user coordinators prior to final release.
  • Performs independent economic evaluations to justify equipment replacements and new system projects.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and a minimum of eight years of experience in engineering design and the application of engineering principles within the area of expertise, or
  • Master's Degree with a bachelor's degree in Engineering and a minimum of six years of experience in engineering design and the application of engineering principles within the area of expertise.
Relevant Work Experience
  • At least six to eight years of professional experience in engineering design and applied engineering principles in the relevant area of expertise, with experience qualifying for New York State University acceptance toward the P.E. examination, required.
  • Strong computer proficiency, including experience with Microsoft Office applications, required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate and collaborate across all levels of staff, required.
  • Experience supervising both professional and unionized employees, preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Driver's License Required
  • Other: Professional Engineering (PE) license Preferred
Physical Demands
  • Ability to respond to system emergencies
  • Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
  • Ability to work in adverse conditions that include, noise, confined spaces, and high elevations
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
  • Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday
  • Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
  • Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
