Overview

Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc. The primary responsibilities of a General Utility Worker (GUW) are assisting in the following functions on the electric distribution system: connecting various underground electrical cables, installing, removing, testing, inspecting, and replacing electrical services.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • The primary responsibilities of a General Utility Worker (GUW) are assisting employees in higher titles within Electric Operations in performing their duties and preparing the worksite.
  • GUW's will assist in the following functions for work on the electric distribution system: connecting various underground electrical cables, installing, removing, testing, inspecting, and replacing electrical services and metering devices to customers, maintaining and servicing distribution equipment to include transformers, network protectors and rectifiers, excavating and clearing obstructed ducts and installing new ducts.
  • In order to perform the functions of the Electric Operations GUW properly, knowledge and skill are required in the following areas, but not limited to: the ability to follow safe work practices and procedures, the ability to work overtime, various shifts (rotating), weekends, and holidays, the ability to obtain certificates of fitness, licenses (CDL), and advance through career path training, the ability to be certified in First Aid and CPR, the ability to troubleshoot mechanical and/or electrical equipment, the ability to perform standard maintenance functions, the ability to use hand and power tools, and knowledge of environmental policies and procedures.
  • Presentation of a positive image of the company to customers is required.
  • Prior demonstrated construction experience in general construction, plumbing, and/or electrical work is preferred.
  • If you accept a job offer in association with this posting, you will be assigned to any of the FOD operating areas within Bronx/Westchester Electric Operations.
  • Prohibited from using Marijuana due a Commercial Motor Vehicle operation requirement (weighting between 10,000-26,000 lbs.). Applicants will be tested for Marijuana as part of the Department of Transportation physical exam.
  • Must be able to work a rotating shift.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • High School Diploma/GED
Licenses and Certifications
  • Driver's License Required
Physical Demands
  • Ability to respond to system emergencies
  • Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
  • Perform extended driving through heavy traffic and severe off-road conditions
  • Perform heavy manual labor, i.e. push, pull, and lift up to 50lbs
  • Ability to carry tools and materials when climbing ladders and scaffolds, and entering confined spaces
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
  • Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
  • Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator, without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
  • Stand, walk, and climb ladders and stairs for the duration of the workday
  • Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday
  • Ability to use hand tools and operate heavy machinery, i.e. jackhammers
  • Acknowledge that if selected, must pass a Physical Abilites Test (PAT)
  • Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
  • Work with equipment with a manufacturer weight rating of 350lbs
  • Use equipment with a maximum weight rating of 375lbs when wearing and/or carrying 25lbs of clothing and equipment
Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
