Job Overview

The Director, Textile Designer- Home and Kids leads the textile team in creating exclusive designs for Private Brands and develops print and pattern work that supports customer-centric brand strategies. The Director sets the seasonal artwork direction for each brand and directs all aspects of graphics, prints, yarn dyes, and embroideries. They bring both strategic and creative vision, driving innovation and elevating design execution. The Director leverages technical expertise to identify opportunities and develop compelling assortments. They build trust with teams and key collaborators while demonstrating curiosity in a broader, more complex business environment that extends beyond the traditional competitive landscape to re-engage customers.

What You Will Do



  • Lead trend and category research across the retail market, identifying cultural influences and their impact on fashion. Source inspiration from runway, museums, vintage markets, trade shows, and other unique outlets.
  • Lead the Textile Team in developing and executing textile designs that support overall product strategy and merchandise objectives, ensuring timely delivery.
  • Set seasonal category artwork direction and lead the process from Seasonal Prep and Concept through Line Development, ensuring alignment with brand DNA.
  • Build strong partnerships with POD and cross-functional teams to translate creative vision into executable strategies.
  • Lead the textile development process, including organizing artwork brainstorms, creating original artwork for responsible brands, and ensuring files meet technical and costing requirements.
  • Partner with Apparel Design teams to ensure cohesive aesthetic integrity within and across brands.
  • Interpret seasonal direction, assortment opportunities, and merchandise pattern trends for assigned categories.
  • Drive research and development of seasonal trends, macro shifts, and artwork nuances.
  • Develop cohesive textile presentations, including virtual or physical boards, artwork headers, and tear sheets that reflect customer needs.
  • Support Design and Merchant teams with textile presentation materials for milestone meetings.
  • Ensure alignment between design strategy and merchant strategy to support overall creative direction.
  • Travel domestically and internationally (Europe and Asia) to identify emerging trends, gather inspiration, and collaborate with vendor partners.
  • Compile and distribute textile development packages in partnership with Apparel Design to vendors and overseas offices for sampling.
  • Refine textile designs based on trend insights, sales performance, and customer feedback.
  • Identify key patterns that define each classification.
  • Adhere to seasonal time and action calendars.
  • Maintain strong industry presence and relationships, including partnerships with print studios, to drive innovation and new opportunities for Macy's.
  • Collaborate with Omni partners to gather input on textile development and communicate direction to overseas offices to ensure successful execution.
  • Foster an environment of acceptance and respect that strengthens relationships, and ensures authentic connections with colleagues, customers, and communities.

Skills You Will Need

Creative & Strategic Vision: Ability to set seasonal artwork direction and translate brand strategy into distinctive, customer-centric print and pattern designs that drive innovation and elevate Private Brands.

Trend Forecasting & Market Intelligence: Strong capability to identify cultural influences, emerging trends, and competitive shifts across global markets, translating insights into commercially relevant textile direction.

Textile Design & Technical Expertise: Deep knowledge of textile design and development processes for apparel, including prints, yarn dyes, embroideries, and technical file preparation that meets production and costing requirements.

Assortment Development & Commercial Acumen: Ability to identify assortment opportunities, refine designs based on trend and sales insights, and balance creativity with business objectives to drive product performance.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Influence: Proven ability to partner effectively with Design, Merchandising, Omni, POD, and vendor teams to align on strategy, influence decisions, and ensure cohesive brand execution.

Presentation & Communication Excellence: Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to develop and deliver compelling textile presentations that influence stakeholders and support milestone meetings.

Project Management & Operational Discipline: Ability to manage multiple priorities within seasonal calendars, adhere to time and action milestones, and deliver high-quality work in a fast-paced environment.

Technology & Design Tools Proficiency: Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator and Photoshop), PLM systems, MS Office, and Excel to support design execution and collaboration.

People Leadership & Talent Development: Inspirational leadership capability with a demonstrated ability to build, engage, and develop high-performing teams while fostering innovation and accountability.

Who You Are



  • Candidates with a bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in a related field are encouraged to apply.
  • 10+ years of experience in textile design and development in a retail or wholesale environment
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
