The State Highway Administration's (SHA) District 7- Howard County (Dayton Shop) is currently recruiting for a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician (HEMT) I position. This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum qualifications listed below by the closing date. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this vacancy or function only. You will need to reapply for any future recruitment conducted for this job classification.

Nature of Work:This position requires basic mechanical knowledge to repair and maintain motor vehicles, diesel powered equipment and/or construction/maintenance equipment. Employees in this class are considered essential employees and are subject to call 24 hours a day, as may be required to maintain continuous operation of the facility. Employees may be required to work rotating shifts including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. In the event of hazardous weather or highway conditions, employees will be called to duty during off-hours in order to maintain and repair equipment. Employees are required to work outdoors in all types of weather and may be exposed to extreme heat, fumes, exhaust and hazardous materials. On some assignments, employees may be required to move objects weighing over 50 pounds.

Qualifications

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: One and one-half (1.5) years of experience servicing, maintaining and repairing motor vehicles, gasoline and/or diesel engines, or heavy-duty construction equipment.

Notes:

1. Applicants may substitute documented and relevant experience repairing, servicing and maintaining automobiles, trucks, buses or comparable equipment on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Completion of an accredited training program for Heavy Equipment or Diesel Repair may be substituted for one and one-half years of the experience. The accrediting body for the training program must be listed on the U.S. Department of Education's Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs.

3. U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as described under the Minimum Qualifications may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

4. Certification as a Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can be substituted for two years of the required education. (The two years of experience used to qualify for ASE testing is considered an integral part of this substitution and cannot also be considered separately to meet Education Minimum Qualifications.)

5. Certification as a Master Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can be substituted for the required education.


Licenses & Certifications

1. Candidates appointed to positions in this classification are assigned duties that require the operation of motor vehicles. Employees must possess and maintain a Class C motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland. All applicants must list their license number and expiration date on the application.

2. Employees are required to possess and maintain a Class B Commercial Driver's License valid in the state of Maryland during the probationary period.

3. Employees will be required to successfully complete agency certification programs to be eligible for permanent status in this classification.
