Service & Pay Period Dates for 2026-2027 Fall 2026 Winter 2027 Spring 2027 UCI Humanities Core Humanities Core serves first-year undergraduate students, introducing them to the major methods and objects of study of humanistic inquiry. Led by some of the most exciting and respected scholars in their respective fields, the program puts first-year students in touch with university research through a series of engaging lectures and gives students hands-on opportunities to develop their writing, critical thinking, and research skills in smaller seminars, all led by seasoned and highly experienced instructors. A series of nine lecture units, delivered by senate faculty from a wide range of disciplines, analyze and interpret many different kinds of primary and secondary sources that speak to a shared topic; in 2026-2027, we continue a cycle on the environmental humanities called Environment | Encounter | Entanglement. Seminar instructors attend and are expected to directly engage with these lecture units in their classroom teaching. We seek Unit 18 faculty members to lead small seminar sections (~20 students) in which students practice these analytic methodologies through classroom discussion and further engagement with texts assigned for the lecture curriculum. Seminar instructors also guide students through a yearlong writing curriculum that includes numerous argumentative essays and a multimodal website, culminating in a capstone research project. These activities are designed to scaffold students' development into interdisciplinary thinkers and researchers as they examine the topic of the course throughout the year.
