General Summary: The Director of Dosimetry provides comprehensive leadership and oversight for all dosimetry services across the Mass General Brigham Department of Radiation Oncology, spanning two Academic Medical Centers (BWH Boston and MGH Boston and six community-based practice locations (DFBCC South Shore Hospital, DFBCC Milford Regional, BWH-Sturdy Mansfield, MGH at Newton Wellesley Hospital, MGH at Emerson Hospital, MGH Danvers). Additionally, the incumbent collaborates with MGB affiliates locally, nationally and internationally. This role is responsible for the strategic, clinical, and operational direction of treatment planning services, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, and patient-centered radiation therapy across the system.
The Director is responsible for supporting, mentoring, and supervising dosimetry leadership and staff, with direct oversight of Dosimetry Managers and indirect oversight of the broader dosimetry team. The incumbent ensures that all dosimetrists perform at the highest levels of clinical, technical, and professional competence, and that treatment planning workflows are standardized, efficient, and aligned with best practices across academic and community settings.
Serving as both a clinical and technical expert, the Director of Dosimetry collaborates closely with physician, physics, and radiation therapy leaders to support high-quality treatment planning, implementation of new technologies and techniques, optimization of workflows, and compliance with departmental, regulatory and accreditation standards. The Director plays a key role in quality assurance, safety initiatives, staff development, and system-wide integration efforts, with a focus on consistency, innovation, and continuous improvement.
The Director of Dosimetry has a dual reporting structure to the Chief of Clinical Physics Operations and the Senior Director of Clinical Operations and is a critical leader in shaping the future of Radiation Oncology services across Mass General Brigham.
Principal Duties / Responsibilities Leadership & Strategic Collaboration
- Serves as the clinical, technical, and operational expert for dosimetry services across Mass General Brigham, performing leadership and advisory functions.
- Represents dosimetry interests across the Department of Radiation Oncology, serving as a unified voice for dosimetrists across academic and community practice settings.
- Partners with Physics Leads, and other leaders as needed, to develop, align, and implement standardized dosimetry workflows, planning standards, and best practices across all sites.
- Collaborates closely with physicians, physicists, and radiation therapists to ensure coordinated, high-quality treatment planning services.
- Leads multidisciplinary meetings and workgroups focused on process improvement, operational efficiency, standardization, and integration across the system.
- Provides leadership during operational disruptions or emergency response situations, ensuring continuity of treatment planning services.
- Supports the development and implementation of new programs, technologies, and clinical services, including participation in equipment selection, software evaluation, and facility planning related to treatment planning in collaboration with physics planning leads.
- Provides subject matter expertise and advisory support to network affiliates as requested by Radiation Oncology leadership.
Clinical Operations & Treatment Planning Oversight
- Maintains expert-level proficiency in radiation treatment planning, contouring standards, plan optimization, and associated planning systems and software through an active treatment planning workload.
- Provides oversight of daily dosimetry operations across two Academic Medical Centers and six community-based locations, ensuring timely, accurate, and high-quality treatment plans.
- Ensures compliance with physician directives, departmental protocols, physics quality standards, and regulatory requirements related to treatment planning.
- Oversees the implementation of new planning techniques, technologies, and workflows, including coordination of validation, training, and go-live support.
- Monitors planning turnaround times, workload distribution, and resource utilization to optimize efficiency and support patient access to care.
- Partners with physics and radiation therapy leadership to ensure seamless handoffs between simulation, planning, and treatment delivery.
- Participates in Disease Site, Operations, and Clinical Meetings, representing dosimetry perspectives and contributing to care optimization discussions.
Human Resources Management & Staff Development
- Provides leadership, mentorship, and oversight of Dosimetry Managers, Leads, and dosimetry staff across all sites.
- Ensures adherence to departmental, hospital, and system policies, professional practice standards, and performance expectations.
- Partners with managers on recruitment, hiring, onboarding, orientation, and competency assessment of dosimetry staff.
- Conducts regular dosimetry meetings and one-on-one sessions to support engagement, professional growth, and succession planning.
- Supports performance management processes, including evaluations, corrective action, coaching, and career development initiatives.
- Ensures appropriate staffing models, workload balance, and coverage to support clinical demand while minimizing overtime and burnout.
- Serves as a liaison to academic dosimetry education programs and supports student education, clinical training, and mentorship.
Quality Assurance, Safety & Process Improvement
- Ensures accuracy, accessibility, and routine review of dosimetry policies, procedures, and planning standards.
- Collaborates with Physics, Quality, and Safety leadership to support plan quality assurance, peer review processes, and process improvement activities.
- Participates in peer review rounds, safety huddles, and quality meetings to promote transparency, learning, and continuous improvement.
- Leads or supports system-wide initiatives aimed at standardization of planning practices, plan quality metrics, and documentation.
- Uses data and performance metrics to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities for improvement across academic and community sites.
Administrative, Financial & Systems Responsibilities
- Participates in departmental operating and capital budgeting related to dosimetry staffing, software, and equipment needs.
- Supports expense management, vendor relationships, and contracting activities related to treatment planning systems and tools.
- Collaborates with billing, coding, and administrative teams to support accurate documentation and billing of dosimetry-related services
- Maintains proficiency with institutional systems used for staffing, scheduling, payroll, and performance management (e.g., Workday, UKG).
- Supports system-wide initiatives related to integration, reporting, and operational analytics.
Education Master's Degree Preferred, Bachelor's Degree in Physics (or related Life, Physical, or Applied Science) Required, JRCERT-Accredited Formal Education in Medical Dosimetry (BS/MS/Certificate) preferred

Medical Dosimetry (CMD) certification by the MDCB or equivalent is required
Experience
8-10 years of clinical medical dosimetry experience with 3-5 years management and leadership experience required.
