Job Description

The Crop Physiology Lab in the Department of Plant Science & Technology is seeking a highly motivated Scientist to design and conduct innovative plant physiology and biochemistry research with a strong focus on root system traits. This position plays a critical role in advancing our understanding of how plant genotype and treatments influence root architecture and cell wall composition.

You will work across laboratory and field environments, contribute to peer-reviewed publications, and mentor undergraduate students-making a direct scientific and educational impact.

The key responsibilities will include:

Research & Data Generation

  • Design and conduct plant physiology and biochemical research projects
  • Grow, manage, and sample soybean plants in lab and field settings
  • Excavate, image, and fractionate root samples
  • Characterize root cell wall composition, including lignin and carbohydrate analysis (e.g., GC-MS)

Data Analysis & Scholarship

  • Collect, manage, and statistically analyze complex biological data
  • Interpret results and translate findings into manuscripts and technical reports
  • Contribute to collaborative, multi-project research initiatives

Student Supervision

  • Supervise and support undergraduate students assisting with research
  • Provide training, guidance, and oversight of daily research activities
Shift

Monday through Friday; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree in related/ relevant area and at least 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have experience with root system architecture analysis, proficiency in biochemical fractionation and analytical techniques (e.g., GC-MS), and have a strong scientific writing and publication record.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Hiring Salary: $52,915.20
Grade: GGS-010
