Summary:

The Surgical Technician Apprentice ismemberof the surgical technician training program and works under the supervision of the Surgical Technician Educator.Thisyearlong training program will teach the apprentice to providesupport for surgeons throughout the operation by preparing,providingand caring for instruments and equipment andmaintaininga sterile field.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates the required knowledge and technical skills to perform core and specialty procedures in all specialties asrequired.
  • Anticipates the expected progression of events in a clinical situation.
  • Demonstrates the ability to problem solve and respond to changing clinical situations.
  • Respects patients' inherent rights to privacy and dignity.
  • Plans patient care in the OR with other members of the surgical teamutilizingthe surgeon's preference card.
  • Creates andmaintainsa sterile field, uses principles of aseptic techniques and universal precautions.
  • Understands and uses instrumentation/ equipment properly, considering the maintenance,safetyand availability.
  • Differentiates sterilization methods for equipment and instruments necessary for specific surgical procedures. Completes the sterilizer logs accurately, legibly and completely.Takes appropriate action for sterilizer discrepancies.
  • Able to perform andmaintainan accuratesponge, sharp and instrument count according to policy.
  • Obtains necessary equipment and supplies according to the surgeon's preference card prior to the case starting.
  • Provides input into physician preference card content and continual updating.
  • Demonstrates initiative in learning new surgical procedures and equipment relating to the OR and the surgical patient.
  • Attends department in-services and continuing education workshops.
  • Demonstrates self-evaluation skills and takes responsibility to seek supervision and guidance as needed.Offers help and responds willingly to requests forassistancefrom co-workers and management.Arrives at work on time. Is punctual in returning from breaks and meals.Able to properly handle drapes and solutions under the supervision of the RN Circulator. Properlylabelsall medications on the sterile field.Competent to handle surgical specimens andassistthe RN in proper labeling.Performs assigned chores in a satisfactory manner.Assistswith orientation of new personnel.

Requirements:

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduation from aschoolofSurgical Technologypreferred.

Experience:

  • One year experience in an acute care hospital settingin the operating room or an instrument care environment preferred.
  • Knowledge of careand handling of instruments and equipment
  • Knowledge of sterilization and cleansing procedures
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate verbally in English.

Certifications, Licenses, or Registrations:

  • BLS certificationrequiredwithin 6 months of starting the training program
