Reimagine What's Possible The SMR Supervisor is responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient supply of hydrogen and demineralized (Demin) water to the Texas City facility. This includes coordinating the operation of a 175 MMSCFD Steam Methane Reformer (SMR), a 445 GPM Demin system, management of the natural gas supply, and coordination of pipeline hydrogen delivery. The role requires close interaction with the Air Products Customer Service Center to support operational alignment and customer requirements.
Facility Overview
The Texas City site is a greenfield development supporting what will become the world's largest single-train ammonia plant, representing a significant expansion of Air Products' Gulf Coast operations into a new geographic area.
The facility includes:
- Air Products' largest SMR with a capacity of 175 MMSCFD hydrogen production
- A 100,000 Nm/hr Nitrogen Air Separation Unit (ASU)
- A 3,600 TPD (tons per day) ammonia plant and associated pipelines
- 60 MW steam turbine power generation
- Extensive utility systems
The facility is connected to the Air Products Gulf Coast Hydrogen Pipeline network and relies on external suppliers for natural gas, water, and power. The ammonia plant is owned by Gulf Coast Ammonia and operates under separate environmental permits, but is operated by Air Products as part of the fully coordinated site.
Leadership & Collaboration
This role works with the SOG Asset Superintendent and leads a team of 8-10 employees. The SMR Supervisor collaborates closely with:
- Air Products Customer Service Center Manager
- Regional Technical Resources teams
to ensure the continuous and reliable supply of hydrogen to both the Gulf Coast Ammonia facility and the Air Products pipeline system.
Operations Management
- Direct and coordinate 24/7 operation of SMR and Demin systems
- Ensure consistent delivery of hydrogen and high-purity demin water
- Maintain process reliability and operational stability
Safety & Environmental Compliance (EH&S)
- Lead Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) performance for SMR and Demin units
- Ensure compliance with SMR air permits and all regulatory requirements
- Promote a strong safety culture protecting personnel, assets, and the surrounding community
During emergencies, the Supervisor must respond crucially to plan, organize, and implement corrective actions.
Team Leadership & Operational Field
- Lead and develop the SMR operations team
- Ensure strict procedural alignment and operating field
- Implement and maintain systems using Air Products Management Systems as the foundation
Performance & Cost Management
- Improve SMR asset utilization and uptime
- Minimize operating costs while maintaining safety and quality
- Drive process improvements and supervise performance metrics

Nature and Scope:
- The Gulf Coast Ammonia Facility represents Air Products the first facility with a combined SOG-SOE scope that is wrapped together to a single operating asset and the first large plant built under PDO HPO systems. It is the world's largest single train Ammonia Plant and will be Air Products first Ammonia Plant operation in 25 years. The onsite SMR will be Air Products largest SMR built to date within the Air Products fleet.
- In addition to leading the Texas City SMR and Demin Unit, the SMR Supervisor is responsible for the continued alignment of the SMR operation with the North American HYCO fleet. Accountabilities will include identification of applicable SMR Best Practices and working with Op-Ex SMR support team.
Accountabilities:
- The preferred candidate should have an engineering degree or equivalent experience or equivalent.
- Minimum 5 years manufacturing experience in a refinery, chemical plant with unit operations responsibility.
- Demonstrated experience in the development of systems, tools and processes.
- Experience with a facility start-up situation preferred.
- Strong social skills and demonstrated ability to communicate reliably across broad range of operational, technical, and commercial areas.
- Demonstrated dedication in the successful EH&S management of chemical processes and facilities.
- 8-10 direct reports
- Operational responsibility for ~ $ 350 MM of plant assets which generate ~ $30 MM of EBITDA annually.
- Facility downtime penalty > $ 100,000 to a max of $ 500,000 per day on a total loss of Hydrogen.
- Multi-unit site with sophisticated interface between SMR, Steam Turbine and other operating units.
- Responsible for SMR Air Environmental permit.
- Serves as day-to-day talk to Air Products Customer Service Center for the total Hydrogen Supply.
- Responsible for HS Compliance guided by Air Products Global EH&S Standards.
