Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret, and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education, and exhibition.

The Transportation department is seeking a full-time Transportation Supervisor to lead and facilitate the loading and unloading of school and charter coaches. The Supervisor will also facilitate the movement of taxis, buses, and private cars during Museum events and assist with processing and receiving Museum deliveries/event load-ins and event load-outs.

The Transportation Supervisor will work outside, which will include working in inclement weather.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervise and facilitate the loading and unloading of school and charter coaches to ensure a safe environment.
  • Supervise and facilitate the movement of taxis, buses, and private cars during Museum events.
  • Fill out logs, collect information on buses and school groups, and assign departure times.
  • Patrol the Museum perimeter for illegally parked buses.
  • Deploy traffic cones and signs to control bus traffic and staging areas.
  • Assist with and help coordinate Museum deliveries.
  • Assist with event parking and logistics.
  • Assist with event equipment load-ins and loadouts.
  • Answer a variety of questions regarding Transportation department operations of the current event or events in the facility.
  • Direct visitors and unauthorized vehicles to alternate entrances and/or parking areas as appropriate.
  • Respond to emergency situations according to AMNH procedures, and emergency evacuation plans. Act as a representative of the department during an emergency as directed by Security.


The expected salary for the Transportation Supervisor is $43,789.42/annual. This position is overtime-eligible and the AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization, and depth and scope of experience.
Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of experience assisting the public and monitoring traffic flow, handling transportation operations, or a combination of training and experience which provides necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for this role.
  • Ability to work on weekends and some evenings and/or early mornings.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Commercial driver's license (CDL).
Physical Demands

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
  • Positioning/change of positioning: Must be able to frequently position oneself/body to accomplish job duties.

    • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling.
    • Climbing: Ascending or descending physical structures.
    • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently. May include any of the following:

      • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force to thrust forward, downward, or outward.
      • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to drag, haul, or tug objects in a sustained motion.
      • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position.
