About the opportunity

SWCA's expanding Architectural History Group is seeking an experienced On Call Assistant Project Architectural Historian to support our California team, working with current staff in our five offices statewide. An Assistant Project Architectural Historian is a core member of the region-wide Cultural Resources program and will collaborate with SWCA's project managers, and leadership on technical and business development efforts throughout California. This is an On Call position located in either our Pasadena or San Diego office.

What you will accomplish

  • Conduct field surveys and perform historic research remotely and in-person
  • Prepare historic documentation, including, but not limited to, California Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) 523 Series forms, historic context sections, building descriptions, property histories, and historic resource evaluations
  • Assist in the preparation of technical reports and historic evaluations
  • Communicate regularly with the Project Manager to ensure that a project's budgetary and timetable needs are met.
  • Take initiative, resolve problems, and create improved procedures to ensure that tasks are completed in the most effective and efficient manner.
  • Maintain SWCA's high standard of technical ethics and quality assurance and is motivated to identify and resolve problems in creative ways.
  • Work closely with the Cultural Resource Team Lead(s) as well as project managers, directors, and principal investigators throughout the company to promote SWCA's business interests in adherences to its mission, vision, and values.
  • Write comprehensive deliverable sections under direction;
  • Perform research and literature reviews of primary and secondary sources;
  • Perform basic data synthesis and analysis using research materials, documented data, and regulatory frameworks;

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in archaeology, anthropology, history, or related field.
  • Two years of relevant, progressively responsible experience.
  • Three years of related experience is preferred; or any equivalent combination of experience, performance, training, and/or education.

An employee in this Pasadena, CA - based position can expect a pay rate of $30.13- $38.24/hr. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law.
