DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The UCSC Office of Risk Services and Occupational Health supports the campus community by identifying, assessing, mitigating, and monitoring risks that could impact the institution's faculty, staff, students, operations, assets and reputation. The department recommends strategies to reduce or eliminate risks, and administers the university's insurance programs to facilitate maximum recovery from accidental losses. The UCSC Risk Services and Occupational Health Office advises the campus community through an enterprise risk management framework to provide a holistic approach to institutional risks. By strategically managing risk we can strengthen the campus safety culture, protect the campus community and support the university's mission by minimizing potential losses and ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies.

Workers' Compensation resides within Risk Services and is responsible for maintaining campus compliance under California Workers' Compensation law. JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Workers' Compensation and Occupational Disability Manager, the Workers' Compensation Analyst is a key member of the UCSC Office of Risk Services. This position provides support in implementing injury prevention programs and strategies to mitigate risk in the University's workers' compensation program. The Analyst coordinates assigned segments of the program and applies professional expertise to identify best practices and innovative solutions for risk reduction and claims management. A core focus of this role is analyzing work status reports and collaborating with medical providers to facilitate successful transitional return-to-work programs, ensuring that injured occupational injured staff are supported through modified duties. The Analyst collaborates closely with high-risk departments to build tailored training, and delivers ongoing educational workshops for faculty and staff.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $71,600 - $85,500/annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

40% - Workers' Compensation Case Coordination

• Provide support with work status reports and transitional return-to-work programs for assigned workers' compensation cases.
• Analyze complex loss areas and compile initial claims data; identify missing information; input essential data; prepare and send initial notifications; maintain confidential claim files.
• Assist in implementing risk control programs and strategies to prevent losses and reduce insurance premiums.
• Update emergency medical providers with workers' compensation billing data and contact information.
• Support administration of claimant DWC 1 forms and the workers' compensation medical prescription card program.
• Liaise with medical providers to obtain timely work status and treatment reports.
• Assist in analyzing complex loss claims data and metrics.

40% - Workers' Compensation Program Development and Delivery

• Assist in implementing preventative measures and injury prevention safety training to reduce workplace injuries.
• Target high-risk areas and frequent injury types to develop specialized programming.
• Conduct thorough risk assessments to identify hazards within the University.
• Develop and implement strategies to prevent injuries, including ergonomic adjustments, hazard mitigation, and safety protocols.
• Design and deliver ongoing staff and faculty training on best practices for injury prevention.
• Collaborate with high-risk departments to tailor safety initiatives to their specific needs.
• Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of implemented measures and training programs using data-driven approaches.
• Provide detailed reporting on progress, including injury claim reductions and cost savings.
• Develop customer satisfaction surveys for training programs to evaluate effectiveness.
• Provide risk analysis support to Risk Services departmental programs.

20% - Risk Services Program Coordination and Support

• Provide risk analysis support to Risk Services programs, including Disability Management, Risk Control, and Driver Safety.
• Conduct risk assessments and identify high-risk areas across the University.
• Support Risk Services initiatives and help implement risk control programs and strategies to reduce compliance and litigation risks.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
• Substantive experience in Workers' Compensation, insurance, risk management or related experience.
• Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of claims management and experience working with third-party administrators, insurers, or employer-sponsored programs.
• Knowledge of occupational disability management and return-to-work practices, including the coordination of modified duties and workplace accommodation assignments.
• Experience working with third-party administrator software programs and databases.
• Proven experience collaborating with and managing various external vendors specific to workers' compensation.
• Proven ability to handle highly confidential data, maintain ethical standards, and exercise sound judgment and discretion when managing sensitive situations.
• Advanced critical thinking and data analysis skills, with a track record of resolving complex issues, interpreting metrics, and recommending appropriate strategic solutions.
• Exceptional written communication skills including a proven ability to write clear professional correspondence, document procedures, and design training presentations.
• Exceptional verbal communication skills including proven ability to deliver training presentations.
• Demonstrated active-listening and collaboration skills, with a proven commitment to dependable attendance, customer service, and a courteous, service-oriented approach.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative, exercise professionalism under pressure, and proactively seek clarification when needed.
• Excellent organizational and time-management skills to effectively manage multiple competing priorities with high accuracy and attention to detail; proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or Google Workspace.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Ability to communicate effectively in Spanish.
