About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what's possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

Role Summary

As a Test Engineer, you'll play a crucial role in the hardware design and development of automated PCBA and unit-level test stations. This includes designing specialized test equipment for a range of power electronic equipment, such as inverters, onboard chargers, and DC fast chargers. You'll collaborate with automation engineers to automate end-of-line and validation test equipment, and you'll also contribute to the continuous improvement of our test stations for future programs.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and lead the design of complex functional test equipment for PCBAs and high-voltage power electronics systems, owning designs from concept through production deployment
  • Define and enforce test equipment design standards, best practices, and reusable design patterns across the team.
  • Author and review electrical wiring schematics, and serve as a technical reviewer on other engineers' design documentation
  • Partner directly with hardware and software engineering project teams to align test system architecture with product requirements
  • Lead design reviews, requirement reviews, DFMEAs, PFMEAs, and Hazard Analyses as a contributor and as a technical reviewer
  • Develop and approve test procedures, defining setup requirements, acceptance criteria, and measurement uncertainty considerations
  • Drive data analysis methodologies and set reporting standards for the team; synthesize complex test results into actionable engineering recommendations
  • Serve as the team's subject matter expert on electronic test instrumentation, including power supplies, oscilloscopes, multimeters, signal generators, power analyzers, and sensors (thermocouples, RTDs, strain gauges, accelerometers, pressure gauges, flow meters)
  • Lead technical root cause analysis on complex, systemic issues and establish corrective actions that prevent recurrence
  • Mentor and develop junior and mid-level engineers, providing day-to-day technical guidance, code and design reviews, and career coaching
  • Partner with the engineering manager to define team priorities, resource plans, and technical roadmaps

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or a related field
  • 8+ years of experience in electrical/electronic systems design, including experience designing circuit board assembly functional test equipment
  • 8+ years of experience in electrical engineering across power electronics, high-voltage systems, or related domains, with direct experience designing test equipment for high-voltage power electronics or battery charging systems
  • Deep expertise in crafting schematics using design software such as Altium, AutoCAD Electrical, or related software. Ability to review and approve others' designs
  • Proven experience in diagnosing and resolving complex, ambiguous technical problems independently and leading others through the same
  • Knowledge of modular test instruments, National Instruments I/O systems (PXI, cDAQ), and communication/bus protocols (RS232, CAN, GPIB, Ethernet, USB)
  • Track record of thriving in fast-paced development environments and setting technical direction under competing priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and elevate team capability
  • PCB design experience required at this level
  • Programming experience preferred
