Business Development

Job Description

The Entrepreneur Programs and Counseling Manager develops and coordinates training seminars and classes designed to meet specific needs of small business owners and managers and works directly with business and industry leaders to design training and professional development programs to meet specific company needs. This role coordinates the resources of the federal, state and local governments with the resources of the University and the private sector to promote growth, expansion, innovation, increased productivity, and management in small businesses and prospective small business in central Missouri.

Key Responsibilities:

Small Business Development Center (SBDC)

  • Responsible for achievement of SBDC economic goals and their tracking
    • Assists in the achievement of program initiatives and economic impact goals as established by the Small Business Administration, the Missouri Small Business Development Center's administrative office, and the Missouri University of Science & Technology SBDC related to job creation and retention, dollar amounts of loans and investments secured, increased sales, the number of businesses acquired or started, jobs created or retained, and regular reporting on client and center activity as requested.
  • Provides programs and counseling services (e.g. training seminars, workshops and 1:1 training) to small businesses by determining needs, recommending options and meeting entrepreneurs' goals
    • Markets educational offerings and promotes the mission of the Missouri Small Business Development Center, including providing presentations, radio interviews and new releases, meeting with legislators and other leaders, and using social media and other platforms appropriate for the programs and audience.
    • Provides an effective consultative service to small businesses by establishing cooperative one-on-one relationships with business owners and managers, recommending viable options or identifying resources to address their stated and/or assessed needs, and conducting follow-up sessions with the management of participating small businesses to determine if the stated objective was met.
    • Assist with the development and administration of training programs to meet specific needs of small businesses in the region by identifying prospective participants, arranging for the use of facilities and equipment, assisting with the printing and distribution of brochures and printed materials, serving as a representative of the Small Business Development Center during training sessions, assisting with workshop facilitation, and collecting and processing fees and associated funds and billing.
  • Generates program income through innovative programs
    • Collecting and processing fees and associated funds and billings.
    • Assists with planning and developing the Small Business Development Center's budget, including any funds obtained through grants and adhering to the grant-making body's guidelines and regulations.
    • Establishes positive working relationships with local and regional economic development organizations, critical community governments, chambers of commerce and business stakeholders and develops and maintains essential partnerships with local and regional organizations, governments, county extension offices, and key leaders in an effort to effectively communicate the Missouri Small Business Development Center's services and value to stakeholders and to generate program income.

Incubators

  • Manages client application and interview process to ensure appropriate fit
    • Promotes the mission of the TTED group, including providing presentations, interviews, social media and the TTED website appropriate for the programs and audiences.
    • Markets the CATALYS&T incubator system by creating and distributing promotional materials highlighting incubator services, resources, and educational offerings, identifying prospective clients, and arranging for tours of facilities and equipment.
    • Schedules the interview process including tailoring the interview questionnaire to suit the incubator and the client.
  • Develops and leads educational and social programs for incubator clients
    • Provides an effective consultative service to startup clients in the CATALYS&T incubator system by establishing cooperative one-on-one relationships with startups, recommending viable options or identifying resources to address their stated and/or assessed needs, and conducting follow-up sessions with participating startups to determine if the stated objective has been met.
    • Maintain professional relationships with incubator clients and be ready to assist with any issues that arise.
    • Manages the development and administration of educational training and social programs to meet specific needs of our startups identified by such avenues as milestone assessment and economic development surveys.
  • Manages incubator operations such as outreach, selection, onboarding/milestones, services, and exit
    • Leads community outreach to all startups letting them know about the CATALYS&T incubator system.
    • Manages the waitlist for incubator space, if needed including knowledge of timing and resources needed by each prospective client.
    • Maintains records of the application and interview processes.
    • Maintains incubator equipment to make sure it is functioning correctly.
    • Conducts exit interviews with incubator clients.
    • Remains knowledgeable about the real estate market in the region.

Other

  • Coordinate, market and promote all TTED and SBDC programs and events.
  • Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses required by the Technology Transfer & Economic Development office.
  • Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
  • Contributes to the overall success of the SBDC and Missouri University of Science & Technology by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least two years counseling entrepreneurs in a wide range of discipline
  • Successful experience in operating and managing a business and/or owning a small business is preferred
  • Experience managing an incubator including implementing programming
  • A Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, business, management, or a related field.
Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $53,976-$76,024 annually.

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
