Job Title: Linux Engineer - Server Migration

Location(s): Salt Lake City, UT

Job Summary
Seeking an experienced Linux System Engineer to support a large-scale data center server migration initiative. This role focuses on planning and executing physical and virtual server migrations, VMware ESXi administration, Linux infrastructure management, iSCSI storage, LVM, automation, and troubleshooting to ensure seamless migrations with minimal downtime.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute end-to-end server migrations across data centers.
  • Migrate physical servers, ESXi hosts, and virtual machines with minimal service disruption.
  • Administer VMware ESXi/vSphere environments, including vMotion, Storage vMotion, DRS, HA, and cross-site VM migrations.
  • Configure, troubleshoot, and migrate iSCSI storage networks, including multipathing, CHAP authentication, and performance optimization.
  • Manage Linux Logical Volume Manager (LVM) for storage provisioning, resizing, snapshots, migrations, and validation.
  • Develop automation tools and scripts to streamline migration activities and infrastructure provisioning.
  • Create migration runbooks, rollback procedures, validation checklists, and maintenance plans.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams and application owners to assess migration readiness and execute migration waves.
  • Support modernization initiatives involving OpenShift, Kubernetes, and other emerging technologies.
  • Troubleshoot complex Linux infrastructure, virtualization, storage, and networking issues during migration activities.
  • Improve infrastructure reliability, scalability, and operational efficiency.
  • Manage VMware ESXi and Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization (CNV) environments.
  • Support Infrastructure-as-Code and CI/CD automation for provisioning and migration workflows.
  • Monitor system performance and resolve bottlenecks before, during, and after migrations.
  • Ensure Linux infrastructure complies with security and operational standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum 4 years of Linux systems engineering or infrastructure experience.
  • Experience with large-scale data center or server migration projects (P2V, V2V, and site-to-site migrations).
  • Strong knowledge of Linux operating systems and Linux internals.
  • Hands-on experience with VMware ESXi/vSphere administration.
  • Expertise in:
    • ESXi host deployment
    • VM provisioning
    • vMotion
    • Storage vMotion
    • DRS
    • High Availability (HA)
    • Cross-site VM migration
  • Strong experience with iSCSI storage networking, including:
    • Initiator/target configuration
    • DM-Multipath
    • CHAP authentication
    • Jumbo frames
    • Storage network troubleshooting
  • Advanced experience with Linux Logical Volume Manager (LVM):
    • Physical Volumes (PV)
    • Volume Groups (VG)
    • Logical Volumes (LV)
    • LVM snapshots
    • vgexport/vgimport
    • Thin provisioning
    • Backup and recovery
  • Strong networking knowledge including TCP/IP, routing, firewalls, load balancing, VLANs, and storage networking.
  • Experience with OpenShift, Kubernetes, Docker, and container orchestration.
  • Experience with Git, Maven, Jenkins, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with VMware ESXi and Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization (CNV).
  • Proficiency in Bash and Python scripting for automation.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within structured maintenance windows and migration schedules.

Preferred Skills

  • Infrastructure automation.
  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
  • Performance tuning and capacity planning.
  • Linux configuration management.
  • Experience with SaltStack.
  • Knowledge of OpenStack.

Work Schedule

  • 100% onsite in Salt Lake City, UT.
  • Five days per week in the office.
  • Schedule includes either a Saturday or Sunday shift as part of the regular workweek.
