High Energy Concepts Section Supervisor

The A5B-4 Section Supervisor will lead A5B-4 and assist the A5B Group Supervisor in leading a group of technically-oriented scientists and engineers focused on developing advanced concepts and technologies in support of the Air and Missile Defense mission. The ideal candidate is a proven leader and subject-matter expert who can offer technical contributions to projects that employ advanced physics concepts and technology related to Natural and Hostile Environments to solve critical problems related to Decision Dominance.

As the High Energy Concepts (A5B-4) Section Supervisor, you will..

Contribute significantly to the evolution and implementation of the A5B group strategy, and align activities of your section staff accordingly. You will work at the Laurel campus and manage on-site staff as well as personnel remotely located at sponsor sites. Propose research initiatives and implement inspiring strategies to address current and future challenges facing air and missile defense. Set a clear vision and path for the section and prioritize section needs.
Scope tasks, work with managers and task leaders to evaluate the needs of their respective processes. Develop physics codes, modeling and simulation (M&S), and analysis tools, and employ state of the art physics concepts and approaches to solve problems related to Hostile and/or Natural Space Environments. Assemble a team of relevant subject matter experts and utilize the best tools and methodologies to solve Sponsors' technical challenges. Interface heavily with Sponsors and management both within and outside of APL. Compile technically solid conclusions and communicate clear recommendations to Sponsors.

Actively engage and partner with section staff to assess their strengths and their limitations. Work with staff to understand their career objectives and seek to match staff development with project objectives. Mentor and coach staff members. Provide and guide staff development opportunities, including the annual performance coaching process.

Assess the section's current and future work and define and propose the analytical and physical infrastructure necessary to carry out that work. This may include suggesting new enhancements to facilities, computing resources, tools, and work spaces, etc. Assist with the annual capital and task planning processes.

Provide supervision and staff planning, including monitoring technical work for accuracy and quality. Delegate and assign tasks to analysis team members and manage efficient execution for individual responsibilities. Assist the group supervisor in the interviewing and hiring processes. Assist with, and implement, staff development initiatives, including staff mentoring, onboarding, and working with staff to understand their career objectives. Support the section and its staff members by implementing AMDS and Laboratory policies and procedures.

Special Working Conditions:Up to 5% local travel within the Washington DC Metro area, as well as domestic non-local travel to support meetings with Sponsors and contractors

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you have...

• MS degree in Physics, Engineering, Mathematics, or other applicable technical discipline
• 3+ years of experience related to DoD Nuclear Survivability in Hostile and/or Natural Space Environments
• A strong understanding of nuclear physics, particle physics, and/or solar physics
• A theoretical background in mathematics and statistics
• Prior experience working with M&S tools that model nuclear effects such as GEANT4, MCNP, ENDF, NJOY, or DIORAMA
• Strong problem formulation and analysis skills
• Previous research, development, and analysis experience
• The ability to work with multiple organizations and have Sponsor engagement experience
• Experience not only working on, but leading technical efforts
• Strong multi-tasking and efficient time management skills, as well as strong attention to detail
• Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills and the ability to relay feedback to the team in a constructive manner
• The ability to leverage staff talent across multiple groups to achieve collaborative expertise for the subject matters under examination
• The ability to understand and prioritize a complex and often-overlapping schedule of deadlines and tasks
• Demonstrated leadership attributes and strong interpersonal skills with a proven background in mentoring staff
• Hold an active Secret security clearance and can ultimately obtain a Top Secret clearance. Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you have...

• A PhD degree in a relevant field
• 5+ years of related experience
• Prior APL line supervisor experience, as well as familiarity with APL's internal processes, including overhead management, hiring, IRAD management, staff development, etc.
• A history of developing relationships with representatives of government organizations such as DTRA, DIA, MSIC, SMDC, SSC, and MDA
• Peer-reviewed publication history
• An active Top Secret security clearance with SCI access

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
