Position Overview


Essential Job Duties
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at North Carolina State University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow position with a primary focus on undergraduate teaching. This position offers a unique opportunity for an early-career scholar to gain experience and develop teaching skills while contributing to the department's academic and educational mission. The successful candidate will be involved in course delivery and development of new student-centered, online, and interactive pedagogical approaches at the undergraduate level.

The primary responsibilities for this position include:

  • Design, develop, and deliver engaging course content for foundational undergraduate courses in materials science and engineering. The postdoctoral fellow will have the opportunity to implement modern educational technologies, and design assessments that support student learning and engagement.
  • Emphasize active learning techniques and student-centered teaching methodologies. The postdoc will be encouraged to adopt and experiment with diverse instructional strategies, such as problem-based learning and the use of digital platforms for interactive content delivery.
  • Incorporate digital tools and modern technologies into the classroom. The postdoc will be encouraged to explore innovative ways to make complex materials science topics more accessible and engaging, such as through interactive software for materials modeling, or blended learning formats.
  • Design and implement assessment tools that measure not only the knowledge acquired but also the development of critical thinking and analytical skills. Use feedback from students and peer evaluations to continuously improve the teaching and learning process.

Other Work/Responsibilities

  • The postdoctoral fellow will have access to teaching development resources, including workshops on pedagogy, classroom management, and curriculum design, ensuring continuous professional growth.
  • While the primary focus of this position is on teaching, the postdoc will have opportunities to engage in research, collaborate with faculty on ongoing projects, and even integrate research into teaching practices.

Work Schedule M-F, 8:00am-5:00pm
Department Required Skills

  • A Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering or a closely related field is required at the time of appointment.
  • Experience or strong interest in innovative teaching methodologies.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate and work within a diverse academic environment.
